Much of the trepidation surrounding the adaptation of the eight-book series, its short stories, and its interconnected novels comes from the disastrous release of a 2017 film adaptation starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. The Dark Tower The story of Roland of Gilead is almost indefinable, and the only person who could have written the story of Roland of Gilead is Stephen King, for the simple reason that Roland’s world is so intertwined with King’s other works that it’s almost impossible to separate the two. Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought long, interconnected stories to theaters, King was doing the same thing in book form. Weaving a story that combined the quest of the Last Gunman, with famous characters and locations from King’s earliest novels, and a “real”, up-close-and-personal appearance by King himself, and trying to condense it into a single film was never going to please fans of the novels… and it didn’t.
Speaking to Collider at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldsman briefly talked about the film, and gave a brief overview of why he considers the film to be as much of a failure as any other. He said:
“I kind of failed on The Dark Tower. It wasn’t like I succeeded. We just failed. We tried to put the pieces together, and we couldn’t keep going, things kept changing, and everyone had a different perspective. A lot of us started and lost. By the end, there were big hopes and dreams that didn’t lead to much. It’s not that we gave up on something, but it’s a loss.”
How can Mike Flanagan avoid another Dark Tower failure?
The answer to that is very simple: do not interfere in the king's affairs. The Dark Tower The story began as a relatively simple short story, beginning with the ominous line, The man in black fled across the desert, followed by the gunman. Set in a bleak, post-apocalyptic landscape, the story contains elements of old Westerns, a bit of magic, and the mystery surrounding the unnamed Gunslinger and his prey.
By the end of the first novel, which collected the king's previously published stories about Roland, the world has become The Dark Tower The novel was originally linear and confined to a specific time and place. This changed very quickly over the subsequent novels, however, as King added elements of doors between dimensions, time travel, and numerous characters and references to his earlier works. By the final novel (except for the final part of the novel) the novel could have been much more varied. wind through keyholeKing even used his own near-death experience in 1999 as a plot point in a radical shift that would have never been conceivable when he wrote his first story about Roland.
