Amazon Prime Video's “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” had a weak start to its second season and couldn't beat Netflix's “Worst Ex Ever” to take the top spot among original TV series available online for the August 30-September 5 period.
Meanwhile, Lee Daniels' “The Deliverance” topped the original streaming movie chart. The Netflix horror film, starring Andra Day and Glenn Close, racked up 8.3 million streams and 930.8 million minutes of viewing after its Aug. 30 release.
“The Rings of Power” racked up 764.7 million minutes watched during the week of the three-episode season that aired on Aug. 29. The second season was delayed due to the writers’ and actors’ strike last year. Two years after it premiered on Labor Day weekend 2022, the second installment of the latest Tolkien adaptation has racked up 827.9 million minutes watched so far. That’s a respectable performance, but given the show’s cult status and its high-profile presence on Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, expectations were undoubtedly higher.
The arrival of the second season gave a huge boost to viewers of the first season of “Rings of Power.” The first season jumped back into the top ten of original series online, settling in at number eight for the week with 229.2 million minutes watched.
Blumhouse Television's four-episode horror documentary “Worst Ex Ever” led the series chart with 939.1 million minutes watched during the period. Netflix's “The Accident” came in third. The Mexican drama series, which held the top spot the previous week, held up well in its second week with 589.4 million minutes watched.
“Kaos,” starring Jeff Goldblum, was among the newcomers to the series chart this week at No. 4. In its first full week of release, the fantasy drama racked up 580.8 million minutes of viewing across eight episodes.
As for the top 10, Peacock's documentary “Gary,” about the turbulent life of childhood star Gary Coleman, was one of the new films this week. The Robin Dashwood-directed documentary has racked up 102.8 million minutes of viewing and 1.1 million views.
