The highly anticipated series on Netflix Magic: The Gathering The series appears to have become a casualty of the streaming service’s cost-cutting measures. Brandon Routh — who was set to voice Gideon Gura in the series — revealed the show’s fate during an interview with Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival, though he seemed surprised that anyone still thought it was moving forward.
Asked about the status of the project, which is based on a digital collectible card game of the same name, the actor replied:“That's not going to happen.” Given that the last time this issue made headlines was years ago, it shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Roth himself suggested. He said:
“I’m not sure. I made an audio recording of this. As far as I understand, no one has put out a press release about this, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. This is kind of old news. I’m not sure why it’s popping up again.”
Since its announcement in 2019, the series has been shrouded in mystery, with updates that were expected to provide a clear picture of the project’s status often being delayed. The last we heard about it was in 2023, when Hasbro CEO Chris Cox confirmed that the project was still in production. However, the latest update to the series seems to shed a whole new light, which many may have expected earlier.
