Karen Cynthia “KC” Fox, an Emmy-nominated interior designer and founding member of the Interior Designers Society of America, died of pancreatic cancer on August 28 at her home in Los Angeles. She was 70.
The San Diego Motion Picture Arts Society confirmed Fox's death on its website on Friday, writing: “She was known for her joy of life, her artistic vision, her deep laugh, and her witty wit, and was beloved by her staff and colleagues. KC generously offered professional advice, received mentorship through the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and served on numerous boards and committees of the San Diego Motion Picture Arts Society and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.”
Fox has worked in film, television, and commercial production design over her 40-year career. She served as set designer for over 130 episodes of Criminal Minds from 2013 to 2020, and has also worked on other shows such as Shameless, Doogie Kamealoha, MD, Jesse, and United States of Tara.
Fox shared an Emmy nomination with production designer Jackson De Gouveia and art design director John R. Jensen for the 1993 television film “Gypsy,” starring Bette Midler. She then worked with De Gouveia and Jensen on the 1994 action film “Speed,” starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock.
Fox also won two Art Directors Guild Awards for her work on David Fincher's 2011 thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, alongside a team led by production designer Donald Graham-Burt, and the miniseries Little Britain USA.
Her credits also include “Multiplicity” (1996), “Volcano” (1997), “Doctor Dolittle” (1998), “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde” (2003), and “Cheaper by the Dozen.” (2003), “Fat Albert” (2004), “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005), “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” (2008), and “He's Just Not That Into You” (2009), “Valentine's Day” (2010), “Rock of Ages” (2012) and more.
She also worked as a production designer on television films such as “Shattered Spirits” (1986), “Liberace” (1988), “Leap of Faith” (1988), and “Get Smart, Again!” (1989).
Fox was born on February 1, 1954. In addition to being a founding member of the San Diego Student Association, she served on the organization's executive committee. She was also a member of IATSE Local 44, the Television Academy, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
