HBO has announced the casting of the leads for its upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. Actors Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell have been chosen to portray the lead characters Dunk and Egg, respectively, according to ComicBook.

The Game of Thrones spinoff will portray the early adventures of Dunk and Egg, well before they became the legends known in the history of Westeros as Ser Duncan the Tall and King Aegon V Targaryen. The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s trio of novellas – “The Hedge Knight” (1998), “The Sworn Sword” (2003), and “The Mystery Knight” (2010) – which were later compiled into a single volume titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” in 2015.

These stories, collectively known as “The Tales of Dunk and Egg,” are set in an era nearly a century before the events of the original Game of Thrones series and about a hundred years after the storyline of House of the Dragon. They chronicle the escapades of a young, earnest knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg, who is none other than the young Prince Aegon, as they journey across Westeros.

HBO’s official description of the show hints at a narrative rich with high stakes and thrilling exploits:

“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Claffey), and his diminutive squire, Egg (Ansell). Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Author George R.R. Martin commented on the expected content and stylistic differences of these novella stories in comparison to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, he said,

“The Dunk & Egg novellas are fully-fleshed narratives more like the novels of A Song Of Ice & Fire than the imaginary history of Fire & Blood ; the stories are right there on the page, and our goal is to produce faithful adaptations of those tales for the screen.”
