Tim Blake Nelson tells fans that his character, the leader in Captain America: Brave New WorldThe character will be brought to life through makeup rather than visual effects. Nelson was present at the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in their second film, amazing hulkplays Samuel Sterns, who fans know as one of the Hulk's most formidable enemies, the Boss. Nelson was at San Diego Comic-Con during Marvel Studios Hall H, and afterwards spoke with Comic-Book about what fans can expect from The Leader. He talked about how he begged Marvel Studios to bring his character to life through makeup so he could feel it but also so that the other actors could respond to it. While he said he would have still done the role no matter what they said, thankfully Marvel agreed. Nelson said:
“When I was asked to come back to play this character, one of my conditions was — although I have to admit that if they had said no, I would have done it anyway… But pretending that I had a condition was, I begged, can you guys let me do this practically? I don’t want to wear the dots. I want to have the device. I wanted to feel the weight of it; I wanted to look in the mirror and see myself that way, and I wanted the actors on set who I was interacting with to see me that way. That makes it even more profound.”
The Leader Breaks Hulk Tradition in the MCU
While Marvel Studios showed off the Red Hulk character in the trailer for the movie, Captain America: Brave New World The film showed footage of The Leader at San Diego Comic-Con, and they kept The Leader's character noticeably hidden. There are brief glimpses of him from behind, but no look at the makeup effects that bring him to life. It's still unclear if his final appearance will remain hidden, but given recent releases, it seems unlikely. The fact that The Red Hulk is brought to life through motion capture highlights just how unique The Leader is within the MCU, especially as far as The Hulks go.
