Trap’s Final Twist, Explained

The latest thriller from director M. Night Shyamalan, trapThe film is now in theaters, and as expected, there are plenty of surprise moments sprinkled throughout. When taking his daughter Riley (Arielle Donoghue) to a Lady Raven (Salika Shyamalan) concert, Cooper (Josh Hartnett) realizes that the lot is swarming with a worrying number of police officers. After asking a sales clerk, he discovers that the officers are all there to catch the infamous local serial killer known as the Butcher, who the audience learns is actually Cooper. This revelation shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, given that it was revealed in the film’s trailer. However, the real mystery lies in how Cooper will manage to evade capture once the party is over..

Given his intelligence, Cooper doesn't take long to set in motion his various plans. After coyly snatching a swipe card from an employee and gaining access to employee-only areas, he steals a police radio. As a result, he is able to listen in on directions from Dr. Josephine Grant (Hayley Mills). An FBI profiler who has been tracking him for some time, she proves to be a worthy adversary as Cooper does his best to leave the stadium undetected. He then sneaks backstage with Riley before quietly threatening Ms. Raven and forcing her to help him escape via her limo. However, she boldly intervenes by suggesting that the trio go straight to their home, a suggestion that thrills Riley and prevents Cooper from remaining in complete control of the situation. Here lies the catalyst for the film's real twists and turns.since the butcher's identity is not a secret.

Cooper continues to see his dead mother in the trap.

As with many other serial killers, Cooper suffers from “mommy issues.” However, viewers don’t necessarily realize this at the beginning of the film. Before the audience understands the extent of his crazy hobby, he keeps seeing a woman, who appears to be a ghost, initially hinting that something deeper may be at play in the film’s narrative. However, it is only toward the end of the film that the audience realizes that the woman he has been seeing is actually his mother, who abused and punished him after realizing what he was capable of as a child. Unfortunately, her actions only allow his deeper, darker motivations to fully take shape.

After his family discovers his true identity, Cooper flees, only to sneak home and confront his wife Rachel (Alison Pill). The audience later learns that she had suspicions about his behavior and followed him before he recognized her. She left the receipt at the crime scene herself..

After securing Cooper with handcuffs and chains, police escorted him from his home to their truck. However, when he saw one of his children’s bikes lying on its side in his front yard, he bent down to prop it up on its stand. Because this trait is attributed to obsessive-compulsive disorder, the police didn’t think twice about it. Unfortunately for them, Cooper took the opportunity to remove the wire from the bike wheel. Then he puts it inside his long sleeve. In the last moment of the movie, he pulls the wire and moves it to unlock his shackles, then laughs maniacally before the movie fades to black and the end credits appear.

The biggest surprise about the movie is that it's set for a possible sequel.which could actually be an interesting concept to explore. A film that appears to be a one-off, but its ending easily suggests otherwise. Given how adept Cooper is throughout the film, watching him continue to evade the police and the FBI would be another entertaining game of cat and mouse.
