Ty Burrell will not be returning to ABC yet.
diverse The comedy pilot “Forgive and Forget,” which Burrell starred in and executive produced, will not move forward at the streaming network, CNBC has learned.
The multi-camera project was originally set to begin at ABC in March. No casting other than Burrell's has been announced. The official plot synopsis states that the show was set to follow “Hank (Burrell)'s lifelong party boy. After an unexpected diagnosis, Hank reconnects with his responsible adult son Ben in hopes of making new memories together.”
Eugene Garcia Cross was the writer and executive producer of the pilot episode, while Robin Shur was the showrunner and executive producer. Burrell was the executive producer under his Desert Whale Productions banner. 20th Television was the studio.
Burrell is certainly best known for his portrayal of Phil Dunphy on the hit ABC sitcom “Modern Family” for 11 seasons and 250 episodes. He won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for the series in 2011 and 2014, and has been nominated eight times in a row.
If “Forgive and Forget” were to be adapted into a series, Burrell would be the second former ABC star to return for a new multi-camera comedy. ABC previously announced that “Shifting Gears,” starring Tim Allen, had been greenlit. Allen co-stars in the series alongside “2 Broke Girls” alum Kat Dennings.
ABC currently has only a handful of scripted sitcoms on its slate. The hit show “Abbott Elementary” is set to return for its fourth season on October 9, while the seventh and final season of “The Conners” is expected to end midway through the season.
