Uzo Aduba on Watching Kamala Harris Accept Nomination at DNC

Actress Uzo Aduba attends the premiere of Searchlight Pictures' “The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat” on Friday in Los Angeles after attending the Democratic National Convention.

She said diverse Watching Vice President Kamala Harris accept the Democratic nomination for president of the United States felt like “a check had finally been paid to the American dream.”

“I felt like the promise of America was still moving toward fulfillment, and I think that makes me excited to know that the country, despite what we've seen over time, is still moving toward becoming a more hopeful, more inclusive nation,” Aduba said.

The Supremes tells the story of three best friends (Aduba, Aunjanue Ellis Taylor, and Sanaa Lathan) and their inseparable sisterhood. Aduba plays Clarice Baker, whom she describes as “a woman who gave her all to everyone, selflessly putting her own dreams aside to see others achieve theirs.”

“She's also the friend who will always give you a gentle nudge to point you in the right direction,” she continued.

Writing and directing the film by Tina Mabry proved to be an uphill battle because the film had a very tight production schedule of only 30 days, meaning the crew had less than a month to shoot the 121-page script, which contained lines of dialogue from 35 different actors and unfolded over four distinct time periods.

“You can’t always look at what’s against you,” Mabry said. “You have to look at the goal. The reality is that we’re a team, a staff, of over 200 people, and we all have the same mission.

“We walked every day in our own way, but most importantly we walked with joy, with smiles on our faces, with love for each other, with hugs and support, and that’s what we did and how we got to the finish line,” she continued. “We got there and came away with a deeply personal story that I hope will really touch people.”

Aunganui Ellis Taylor, who plays Odette Henry, called the film a “celebration” of sisterhood. “Romantic love can fade, flings can fade, husbands can fade, girlfriends can fade, but your friends never go away. And that's what this film celebrates,” the Oscar nominee said.
