USA

In January 2024, just days after WWE announced a $5 billion partnership with Netflix that would see its flagship show, Monday Night Rawwhich will move its U.S. headquarters to the streaming giant in 2025, has been sued by former employee Janelle Grant. She accuses McMahon of sexual assault and trafficking, detailing the horrific events she allegedly endured not only at the hands of the legendary promoter, but also others in his inner circle, including former WWE head of talent relations John Laurinaitis.

The lawsuit also alleges that despite Grant being fired from WWE and signing a non-disclosure agreement in March 2022, McMahon continued to attempt to traffic her to a wrestler later that year. As such, the lawsuit is currently on hold, with the Department of Justice opening its own investigation into McMahon, Laurinaitis, and WWE for human trafficking allegations.

“Ms. Grant has agreed to the request of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York to discontinue her case against Mr. McMahon, WWE and Mr. Laurinaitis, pursuant to a pending non-public investigation.” Grant's attorney, Anne Callis, said in a statement earlier this year about the Justice Department's investigation: “We will cooperate with all appropriate steps forward.”

With WWE more commercially popular than ever, it’s hard to say at this point where things will go. These allegations could lead to jail time for McMahon and others, further tarnishing the company’s already tarnished reputation.
