After Colin Farrell's Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot shares a heartfelt waltz with his mother in the latest trailer for the film, The PenguinHe goes on a murderous spree, stabbing his first victim with a pocket knife and dumping the next in a body bag.
“The world is not designed for honest man success,” Cobblepot says in the film's trailer. “That should be the American dream. You know, a nice story with a happy ending. But that's not how the world works.”
In the eight-episode series Penguin, Farrell plays the Batman supervillain who “attempts to take over Gotham’s underworld,” according to the film’s synopsis. The series, created by Lauren Lefranc, is part of the new “Batman saga,” which began with Matt Reeves’ 2022 film, The batStarring Robert Pattinson. The series begins after Batman, Which ends with the assassination of mafia boss Carmine Falcone. During a screening at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, Lefranc said she was inspired by the latest DC Comics installment, after seeing an early version of The bat.
“I wanted to do justice to the world Matt created,” she said (via USA Today“Oz was a wild man, a dark, charming, problematic, interesting, strange soul, and I wanted to get into him.”
Farrell, who joined the pop culture conference via video chat, said he grew up watching Burgess Meredith's Penguin in the 1960s. Batman TV program.
“I was drawn to the traditions of this world, and I felt humbled and excited to be in Gotham,” he said.
During the screening, Reeves also announced that Farrell would be returning as the Penguin in Batman: Part IIwhich arrives on October 2, 2026. The PenguinThe cast of the series includes Cristin Milioti, Rehnzi Velez, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O'Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen. The series premieres on Max on September 19.
