What is Vanished into the Night about?

This would be complicated enough at the best of times, but Pietro and his wife, Elena (Annabelle Wallis), are in the middle of divorce proceedings. However, Elena, who was in Milan, rushes back to her home in Bari, Italy, just in time to hear a phone call from a man demanding a ransom of 150,000 euros for the safe return of the children..
Neither of them has that kind of money, but as Elena points out, Pietro knows someone who does: his ex-boyfriend Nicola (Massimiliano Gallo). Pietro asks Nicola for money, and he is willing to give it to him, but Pietro must first bring him drugs.Pietro agrees, and the middle part of the film is devoted to his drug escape, a very long interlude in which everything that could go wrong occurs, including Nicola pulling a gun on Pietro when he returns.
What happens at the end of Vanished into the Night?
Pietro finally arrives at Elena's house relatively unharmed with money for his children. He walks in… and finds his children sitting at the kitchen table eating cereal. Needless to say, Pietro is puzzled.Then Elena enters and denies knowing anything about the kidnapping or the drugs that Pietro smuggled in to get the 150,000 euros. Elena throws Pietro out and tells him he is crazy, but Pietro knows he is not.
While Pietro was driving, Elena sent him an audio recording she had made of him confessing to drug trafficking. She says she needs him to come to the airport that night and sign consent letters so she can take their children to New York. If he doesn't, she'll use his confession against him.After a horseback riding lesson, he tries to get his children to admit that Elena was responsible for taking them from his home, but they don't seem to remember.

Disappointed, Pietro goes to his children's room at home and sees a wrapper that wasn't flushed down the toilet. At the beginning of the movie, he showed his son that he had to flush the toilet twice to get it to work. The person who tried to flush it didn't know the rule. Pietro goes to Elena's house and finds that the wrapper was from a box of oxycodone. Pietro mentions that Elena used oxycodone to control the children when she took them from Pietro's house.Now Pietro can prove something that will get Elena into trouble as well.
Who do the kids end up with?
Pietro runs through the airport to find Elena and the children at the station. He tells them that there has been a change in plans; Elena will now be going to America alone. Pietro shows Elena the wrapper of the pill she used to drug their children. Elena is mad. She insists that she knew what she was doing, and that the children were in no real danger. But Pietro insists that he will report her if she does not leave without them.
“What choice did I have?” Elena asks. “She never wanted to make a compromise or any kind of agreement. I had no way out. This isn’t my life. I can’t live this way anymore.” Elena clearly has some sort of grievance against Pietro, but it’s so vague that it’s hard to figure out what it is. In the end, Pietro seems to think he has more right to the children now than Elena, and leaves the airport with them..

After all, she still has a recording of Pietro confessing to a crime that would send him to prison.
If one uses what he has on the other, it will be mutual destruction.Even if their evidence doesn’t hold up in court, it’s enough to tie them together for a while, something neither of them wants. It seems like it could at least get them to talk about a settlement, as Elena wanted, even if it’s not clear what kind of settlement she wants. Needless to say, though, the “reasons” for this movie are so vague that it's hard to tell who's right and who's wrong..
