As a self-confessed person Wrexham AFC striker Ollie Palmer likes to keep things simple. In a quick video chat with rolling stone From the team bus, Palmer spoke about his simple matchday preparation routine and how Wrexham's new partner, American Crew, makes it easier to keep the team looking their best.

Wrexham have just completed a tour of friendlies in the United States and Canada, including matches against Premier League and MLS teams in Santa Barbara, San Francisco and Vancouver, cleverly dubbed the Wrex Coast Tour. Rarely does a non-Premier League team get the same amount of attention and attention as Wrexham, especially in the United States. But Palmer and his Wrexham teammates have gained worldwide fame thanks to a Hulu/FX documentary series. Welcome to Wrexham.

The show premiered in 2022 and chronicles the Welsh football club’s historic but long-suffering attempts to gain promotion from the National League, which were given a boost after the team was bought by Ryan Reynolds and Robert McElhenney. After (spoiler alert) failing to secure promotion in their first season, Wrexham AFC managed to win back-to-back promotions, first from the National League to EFL League Two and then to EFL League One, two tiers below the Premier League. The team’s relationship with Ryan Reynolds even led to the appearances of Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullen in the new season. Deadpool and Wolverine film.

Signed in 2022, Palmer has been a key factor in Wrexham’s continued success, scoring 39 goals so far for the club. Standing at 6ft 5in, he has an intimidating presence on the pitch but is friendly off it. He is quick to shower praise on his team-mates, the town of Wrexham and ‘Rob and Ryan’ – as they are known to everyone in Wales, it seems.

Palmer played for a number of clubs, including AFC Wimbledon and Mansfield Town. But as he has in other interviews, he has reiterated his desire to finish his career at Wrexham. Part of that is clearly down to the camaraderie among the players, including off the pitch. “When we travel with the team, you know, we play golf which brings everyone together. The atmosphere is good, it’s something we like to do on trips abroad and here in America.”

Wrexham have major sponsorship deals with United Airlines, HP, SToK and Vistaprint, among others, with American Crew the latest to partner with the team. The personal care company has partnered with three of the club’s stars, Ollie Palmer, Jordan Davies and Paul Mullen, before they made the trip to the US.

Wrexham AFC has had a great run of friendlies in North America, drawing with Premier League sides Chelsea and Bournemouth and easily beating MLS side Whitecaps FC in Ryan Reynolds’ hometown of Vancouver. Venues have included the UC Santa Barbara campus and Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco. The Wrexham women’s team has played friendlies at the UCLA campus and in Portland, Oregon.

The team’s next season starts on August 10, when Wrexham will undoubtedly be trying to secure promotion back to the Championship. The team’s rapid rise up the English football ladder would have alarmed anyone, but Palmer has stuck to the simple routine that has worked for him. If he has the kind of superstitions that sportsmen are known for, there’s no evidence for that. “I’ve been doing the same thing for 12 years. Basically when I wake up, I have porridge, then I get ready.”

Likewise, Palmer keeps his hair care routine simple. Keeping his perfectly styled mane on the pitch is an enviably easy process for Palmer, who says it takes him “8 seconds” to get ready. “It’s probably the product, to be honest,” he adds.
