Users of X, the social network owned by Elon Musk and formerly known as Twitter, reported multiple issues accessing the site and app on Friday evening.
Bug reports for the X app started to spike around 9:30 p.m. PT, according to monitoring service Downdetector. Bug reports had risen to more than 7,000 by 9:42 p.m. PT, with 66% of users saying they were having issues with the app, 29% saying they were having issues with the site, and 5% citing a server connection issue.
According to several users who posted on Downdetector, the dates on all of X's posts in their feeds were showing as “December 31, 1969.” One commenter said they could access X “but none of the posts were showing up, and the home page just showed the welcome message.” It's unclear what caused the issues. X's Downdector page showed a focus on problem reports from the New York metro area.
X/Twitter has experienced sporadic technical issues in the past, including in July 2023 when key features of the service appeared to not work properly. And in March of last year, a live audio event on Twitter Spaces with Ron DeSantis went down, disrupting the Florida governor’s official announcement of his unsuccessful bid to run for president of the United States in 2024.

In the months since Musk struck a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter in October 2022, the company has laid off about 80% of its employees. Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, unilaterally rebranded Twitter as X in July 2023; he had previously announced that he would change Twitter to X, the “everything app.”
