New CV, MariaThe film, which will open in select theaters around Thanksgiving and hit Netflix on Dec. 11, stars Angelina Jolie as the iconic operatic soprano Maria Callas. In the trailer, a pianist asks Maria what she’s going to sing as the singer looks out into an empty concert hall. A little over a minute later, Callas’s answer is revealed, and it’s not what you’d expect. But in between the question and answer, you see Callas in her many costumes as people attend to her, an intimate black-and-white shot of her at a photo shoot, and the raw emotion she mustered for her historic performances.
Filmmaker Pablo Larrain (Jackie, Spencer) The film, which also stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Alba Rohrwacher, focuses on Callas' later life in Paris when she avoided the public eye.
“This film is my most personal work to date,” Larrain said in a statement. “It is a creative and psychological portrait of Maria Callas, who, after devoting her life to performing for audiences around the world, finally decided to find her own voice and identity and sing for herself. I feel deeply honored to tell this story and share it with audiences around the world, as Maria did in her own life.”
Callas died in 1977 at the age of 53. Before she lost her voice, her ability to convey deep emotion in her singing and acting earned her the nickname “La Divina” – the Divine. Artists such as Patti Smith and Linda Ronstadt have cited her as one of their favorite singers.
