Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson star in the animated sequel, out in November
The ocean beckons in a new trailer for Moana 2, a sequel to Walt Disney Animation Studios’s 2016 musical adventure Moana. The action-packed clip showcases the return of voice actors Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Moana and her demigod pal Maui as Moana embarks on a new journey with her adorable animal sidekicks.
The film, directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, was initially announced as an animated Disney+ series but was reimagined into a sequel film. The official synopsis notes, “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.” The film will feature music by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina.
Moana 2 is the first of two Moana films in the works from Disney. The studio is currently working on a live-action adaptation of the 2016 animated original, which will involve Johnson and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music for Moana and earned a Best Original Song Oscar nomination for “How Far I’ll Go.”
Earlier this year, Johnson teased the sequel, saying, “I can’t wait for fans to see the film, the technology, the effects, cutting edge. We all really went for it. We thought if we’re gonna make a sequel to something so beloved, let’s really go for it.”
Moana 2 hits theaters on Nov. 27, 2024.
