Venice Film Festival Reveals Lineup

The official lineup for the Venice International Film Festival will be announced today at 11am CET by artistic director Alberto Barbera and Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, who has become the new president of the festival's parent organization, the Venice Biennale.

As previously announced, Tim Burton's Beetlejuice — starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe — is set to open out of competition for what is likely to be one of the most star-studded Lido releases in recent memory.

As of last week, Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar was also looking to enter the competition with “The Room Next Door,” his first English-language feature film starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. diverse Films previously expected to make the list include “Joker 2,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga; “Maria,” directed by Pablo Larrain, a biopic of the famous opera singer Maria Callas starring Angelina Jolie; and “Queer,” directed by Luca Guadagnino, which tells the love story between Daniel Craig and “Outer Banks” star Drew Starkey.

This year’s international jury will be chaired by renowned French actress Isabelle Huppert, alongside fellow jury members James Gray (“Ad Astra”), Andrew Haig (“All We Are Strangers”), Agnieszka Holland (“The Green Border”), Kleber Mendonça Filho (“Bacurau”), Abderrahmane Sissako (“Bamako”), Giuseppe Tornatore (“Cinema Paradiso”), Julia von Heinz (“The Treasure”) and Zhang Ziyi (“Memoirs of a Geisha”).

The 81st Venice Film Festival is scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 7.
