Weekly Commentary (Updated July 27, 2024)Early buzz around potential award nominees has begun.

The Venice Film Festival has unveiled its star-studded lineup for the event with the world premieres of Todd Phillips' “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Pablo Larrain's “Maria” and Luca Guadagnino's “Queer,” all of which will hopefully make a strong first impression on the international stage.

In Toronto, the list is led by Mike Leigh (“Hard Truths”), Ron Howard (“Eden”) and John Crowley (“We Live in Time”). Additionally, Oscar-winning editor William Goldenberg makes his directorial debut with “Unstoppable,” starring Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez, which could be a commercial contender.

Telluride doesn't announce its lineup until the day before the festival starts on August 30. However, diverse The Cannes Film Festival has indicated a strong lineup based on the films’ rankings at other festivals. Among those rankings, the festival will include possible world premieres of films such as “Conclave” by Edouard Berger, “Nickel Boys” by Ramil Ross, “Piece by Piece” by Morgan Neville and “The End” by Joshua Oppenheimer. Additionally, re-releases of films from the Cannes Film Festival may be shown in the United States, including “Emilia Pérez” by Jacques Audiard.

We also got our first look at James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” which has been confirmed for release in December but won’t be playing at fall festivals. Be warned that the film could be a major awards season flop, especially with star and producer Timothée Chalamet backing the project.

The 97th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 2. Below are the full list of films. All lists of films, titles, distributors and producers credited are not final and are subject to change.

**Indicates that the film has not yet been released or can be shown in 2025.
