A Fictional Take on History

Shogun might be a fictional tale, but it’s rooted in real life. Each of the characters is based on someone real from the 1500s and 1600s. Blackthorne is based on historical English navigator Williams Adams; Toranaga on Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the first shogun in Japan, and Mariko on Hosokawa Gracia, a member of the aristocratic Akechi family. 8 Ted (2024)

An R-Rated Comedy Wrapped In A Sitcom

Ted uniquely blends both R-rated comedy and traditional ‘90s sitcom, presenting itself like the latter in tone and episode pacing but with the raunchiness and adult subject matter fans love from the movies. As John mentions in the movies, Ted was his only friend. But the pair get up to all the hijinks a teen might have with humans, from dating to experimenting with drugs, dealing with bullies, and more. The show is strangely as heartwarming as it is non-politically correct and downright hilarious.

7 True Detective: Night Country (2024)

A Chilling Tale With A Killer Cast

While True Detective: Night Country might not rank among the top True Detective seasons (those honors still go to seasons 1 and 3), Jodie Foster is the shining star heading up this fourth season. She is equally matched by professional boxer Kali Reis in a gripping performance as a troubled cop dealing with her own personal demons (not to mention an ongoing rift with Foster’s character). The story combines traditional whodunit mystery with supernatural elements. It feels more like The Outsider meets True Detective than a traditional season of this popular series, with elements of horror that will make fans jump out of their seats and turn the lights on at night.

6 Hazbin Hotel (2024)

A Funny Take On Redemption

Hazbin Hotel uses a serious topic of tortured souls and turns it into a hilarious comedy about a young woman with so much hope and a good heart, despite her position in the depths of Hell. It’s a testament to the show’s reception that the first episode was mostly financed by Patreon followers and animated entirely by freelancers, then released on YouTube. Prime Video quickly swept in and picked up the show. From the music to the bright colors, potty mouths, and gruesome scenes, fans have been loving Hazbin Hotel. Stream on Prime Video.

5 Masters of the Air (2024)

Also featuring Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) and James D’Arcy (Oppenheimer), Constellation is creepy horror mixed with mind-bending stories. 3 Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)

Cormier does a wonderful job leading this series as Aang, who has more power and influence than anyone else surviving in the world. His primary goal is to stop the Fire Nation, which functions like an army, from trying to take over the world. From the visual effects to the scene-framing music and the impressive acting, Avatar: The Last Airbender has done justice to the original. Stream on Netflix.

2 A Murder at the End of the World (2023)

Released at the end of 2023, A Murder at the End of the World is a gripping new entry into the murder mystery genre. Emma Corrin is Darby Hart, a talented coder and amateur sleuth who somehow gets invited to a lavish party at a billionaire’s home in Iceland. She finds herself surrounded by people she feels are far more important and influential than her. But when one of them winds up dead, then another, Darby puts her hobby and passion for solving crime to good use to try and figure out what’s happening. Told alongside this story is the history of Darby’s relationship with the first victim, leaving fans to guess how it all connects.

A Dark, Sinister Whodunit

A Murder at the End of the World is a darker, more ominous whodunit than some of the lighter, more comedic murder mystery movies and shows of the last decade, like Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building. Beyond the tone, however, there’s a deep meaning behind the ending. This is the type of show that makes fans think and examine the state of society once the end is revealed. It’s one many won’t see coming and is more frightening than imaginable.

1 The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)

At the center is Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), patriarch of the Usher family, who owns a pharmaceutical business. When all six of Roderick’s grown children die one by one, each by horrifying circumstances, it’s clear there’s something sinister at work. But what and why? The story is told through the lens of a defeated Roderick speaking to the Assistant United States Attorney C. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly), giving his full confession, alternating with flashbacks.

Poetry in Motion

The Fall of the House of Usher beautifully uses Poe’s captivating prose, making people and things into characters to which viewers can relate (or despise). Each is more despicable than the next, with Carla Gugino’s role as Verna (note: that’s an anagram of “Raven”) piecing it all together, eventually. From the performances to the dark and troubling scenes, The Fall of the House of Usher is one of the best shows of 2023. The unique narrative style is one that hasn’t been done before, making it a ground-breaking show in more ways than one.
