10 Shogun (2024)
Adapted from the 1980 miniseries which itself was based on the James Clavall novel of the same name, Shogun is gearing up to be one of the most talked about new shows of the year. The story centers around two men and a woman who meet, but all come from different worlds. John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) is an English sailor, Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is a powerful daimyo, and Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai) is a dishonored woman from a prominent family. Together, they study the ways of the samurai to battle evil forces and a pending war.
A Fictional Take on History
Shogun might be a fictional tale, but it’s rooted in real life. Each of the characters is based on someone real from the 1500s and 1600s. Blackthorne is based on historical English navigator Williams Adams; Toranaga on Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the first shogun in Japan, and Mariko on Hosokawa Gracia, a member of the aristocratic Akechi family. With many reviewers saying this series supersedes the original from the ‘80s, Shogun is gripping, well-acted, and respectful of the source material. Stream on Hulu.
9 The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (2024)
The most anticipated of the many The Walking Dead spin-offs, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live exceeded expectations. It has been the most popular and best-reviewed of the spin-off series. The show centers around the characters of Rick Grimes and Michonne, telling the story of where Rick has been since he left the main show, along with Michonne’s journey to find him once she learned he was alive. The pair come together for the first time in years, but they are poised to face the biggest enemy they have ever faced to date in the Civic Republic Military (CRM).
A Long-Awaited Story of Love and Survival
With a mainly new supporting cast and an excitingly refreshing story, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is more emotionally charged than the original series became in its later seasons. The show tackles how trauma can change a person, the difficult decisions people will make to protect the ones they love, and a search for getting back to one another in dire circumstances. It’s a worthy follow-up that any fan of the original will enjoy. Stream on AMC+.
8 Ted (2024)
Ted
- Release Date
- January 11, 2024
- Creator
- Seth MacFarlane
- Seasons
- 1
Bringing the lovable sentient and foul-mouthed teddy bear from the movies to the small screen, Ted serves as a prequel to the movies Ted and Ted 2. It follows Ted’s life living with the Bennett family after his 15 minutes of fame are up. John Bennett, played by Mark Wahlberg in the movies, is a teenager dealing with all the typical coming-of-age challenges. Ted, meanwhile, voiced by creator Seth McFarlane, is trying to figure out what’s next now that society has gotten used to his existence, and no one really cares about a walking, talking toy bear anymore.
An R-Rated Comedy Wrapped In A Sitcom
Ted uniquely blends both R-rated comedy and traditional ‘90s sitcom, presenting itself like the latter in tone and episode pacing but with the raunchiness and adult subject matter fans love from the movies. As John mentions in the movies, Ted was his only friend. But the pair get up to all the hijinks a teen might have with humans, from dating to experimenting with drugs, dealing with bullies, and more. The show is strangely as heartwarming as it is non-politically correct and downright hilarious.

7 True Detective: Night Country (2024)
True Detective

- January 12, 2014
- Cast
- Mahershala Ali , Stephen Dorff , Carmen Ejogo , Scoot McNairy , Jodie Foster , Kali Reis , Matthew McConaughey , Woody Harrelson , Alexandra Daddario , John Hawkes , Colin Farrell , Vince Vaughn
- Seasons
- 4
True Detective: Night Country was a long time coming, arriving five years after the last season of the anthology crime drama. The setting is Alaska where a group of men from a remote research station mysteriously go missing. As the local police investigate, other secrets are unearthed, including those involving the previous murder of a young woman that clearly still weighs heavily. The detectives heading up the investigation, meanwhile, have secrets of their own.
A Chilling Tale With A Killer Cast
While True Detective: Night Country might not rank among the top True Detective seasons (those honors still go to seasons 1 and 3), Jodie Foster is the shining star heading up this fourth season. She is equally matched by professional boxer Kali Reis in a gripping performance as a troubled cop dealing with her own personal demons (not to mention an ongoing rift with Foster’s character). The story combines traditional whodunit mystery with supernatural elements. It feels more like The Outsider meets True Detective than a traditional season of this popular series, with elements of horror that will make fans jump out of their seats and turn the lights on at night.

While she gets some help from “Radio Demon” Alastor (Amir Talai), unbeknownst to Charlie, he is just there to get a good laugh at her ridiculous ideas. In his eyes, these awful souls are beyond redemption.
A Funny Take On Redemption
Hazbin Hotel uses a serious topic of tortured souls and turns it into a hilarious comedy about a young woman with so much hope and a good heart, despite her position in the depths of Hell. It’s a testament to the show’s reception that the first episode was mostly financed by Patreon followers and animated entirely by freelancers, then released on YouTube. Prime Video quickly swept in and picked up the show. From the music to the bright colors, potty mouths, and gruesome scenes, fans have been loving Hazbin Hotel. Stream on Prime Video.

3 Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
Dive into the world of fantasy with Avatar: The Last Airbender which brings the stories depicted in the animated show of the same name to life in live-action form. Set in a post-apocalyptic future world, humans have been divided into four classes: those who can control water, earth, fire, or air. Some are benders who can manipulate one of these four elements using telekinesis. But there’s only one young boy, Aang (Gordon Cormier), who has the ability to bend all four. The 12-year-old has the weight of the world on his shoulders, responsible for keeping the peace among the groups and between the mortal and spirit worlds.
Mesmerizing Fantasy About Peace and Harmony
Cormier does a wonderful job leading this series as Aang, who has more power and influence than anyone else surviving in the world. His primary goal is to stop the Fire Nation, which functions like an army, from trying to take over the world. From the visual effects to the scene-framing music and the impressive acting, Avatar: The Last Airbender has done justice to the original. Stream on Netflix.
2 A Murder at the End of the World (2023)
Released at the end of 2023, A Murder at the End of the World is a gripping new entry into the murder mystery genre. Emma Corrin is Darby Hart, a talented coder and amateur sleuth who somehow gets invited to a lavish party at a billionaire’s home in Iceland. She finds herself surrounded by people she feels are far more important and influential than her. But when one of them winds up dead, then another, Darby puts her hobby and passion for solving crime to good use to try and figure out what’s happening. Told alongside this story is the history of Darby’s relationship with the first victim, leaving fans to guess how it all connects.
A Dark, Sinister Whodunit
A Murder at the End of the World is a darker, more ominous whodunit than some of the lighter, more comedic murder mystery movies and shows of the last decade, like Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building. Beyond the tone, however, there’s a deep meaning behind the ending. This is the type of show that makes fans think and examine the state of society once the end is revealed. It’s one many won’t see coming and is more frightening than imaginable.
1 The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Released in the Fall of 2023, The Fall of The House of Usher became a massive hit for Netflix thanks to its creepy story and talented cast. But it’s also the unique premise: the story weaves together elements from various works of poet Edgar Allan Poe, creating a thematic story that’s as disturbing as it is entertaining. At the center is Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), patriarch of the Usher family, who owns a pharmaceutical business. When all six of Roderick’s grown children die one by one, each by horrifying circumstances, it’s clear there’s something sinister at work. But what and why? The story is told through the lens of a defeated Roderick speaking to the Assistant United States Attorney C. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly), giving his full confession, alternating with flashbacks.
Poetry in Motion
The Fall of the House of Usher beautifully uses Poe’s captivating prose, making people and things into characters to which viewers can relate (or despise). Each is more despicable than the next, with Carla Gugino’s role as Verna (note: that’s an anagram of “Raven”) piecing it all together, eventually. From the performances to the dark and troubling scenes, The Fall of the House of Usher is one of the best shows of 2023. The unique narrative style is one that hasn’t been done before, making it a ground-breaking show in more ways than one.
