Clay Higgins Targets Haitian Migrants in Racist Rant


After Haiti As a Republican advocacy group filed criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance, one congressman responded with racist rhetoric that is entirely in keeping with the character of the modern Republican Party.

Earlier this week, the Haitian Bridge Alliance, a nonprofit organization, took advantage of an Ohio law that allows private citizens to file criminal charges against individuals, accusing Republican candidates of a series of crimes related to a smear campaign they promoted against Haitian immigrants living in Springfield, Ohio. Trump and Vance falsely claimed the immigrants were undocumented, and terrorized the town in a variety of ways — including killing and eating local pets.

Rep. Clay Higgins (R-Louisiana) responded to the Haiti Bridge Coalition’s accusations of overt racism on X, formerly known as Twitter:

“All these thugs must come to their senses and leave our country before January 20,” he added.

Higgins was no stranger to perpetuating anti-black racism. In 1992, Higgins, then an Army policy officer, described David Duke, the former Grand Master of the Ku Klux Klan, as a “close friend” during Duke’s failed presidential bid.

“Apart from the fact that David is a patriotic young man and all that, the boy is a Nazi, and that's a real problem,” Higgins said. Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper, He added that he actually voted for Duke in his 1991 gubernatorial campaign.

Higgins is also a die-hard Trump supporter, and has spread several conspiracy theories popular among Make America Great Again followers, including that the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol was orchestrated by the FBI.
