Colin Farrell has promised that The Penguin will be a “twisted” and “incredibly violent” spin-off series from The Batman. Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, played by Farrell, managed to survive the Riddler’s (Paul Dano) watery carnage at the conclusion of Robert Pattinson’s 2022 movie, and now it’s Oz’s time for exploiting crime in the next chapter of the DC Elseworlds saga. While participating in a recent interview promoting Season 1 of his Apple TV+ show Sugar, Farrell teased a “dark, and really heavy” addition to the DC franchise. Farrell told MovieZine’s Jonatan Blomberg:
“We wrapped it, man. We did it — stuck a fork in it two weeks ago. And it was a long and really wonderful experience. And it’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark, and really heavy, I think, certainly it was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun. I had an amazing time. But it’s incredibly violent.”

Farrell continued:
“Yeah, it’s just one man’s rise to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting, which is a certain power or social status. And, you know, the death of Carmine Falcone at the end of [The Batman] leaves this vacuum in Gotham to be filled, and so there are various people that are grabbing for that power. And this is Oswald’s journey, trying to rise to the top through extraordinary obstacles. And it’s just super dark. Lauren LeFranc [series showrunner] wrote a really twisted eight hours of television.”
A New Tale in The Batman Saga
Fans won’t have to wait long, and they can check out The Penguin when it drops this fall. The Max original series will focus on Oz Cobblepot’s rise to power in Gotham City following the events of director Matt Reeves’ The Batman. While a lot of mystery still shrouds the show, the teaser does give fans a glimpse of Oz visiting Salvatore Malroni (Clancy Brown) in prison. And in a separate interview, star Colin Farrell even teased a future “feature” for the villainous Penguin. Farrell said while appearing on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast:
“It’s going to be an eight-part thing. Around Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum created when Falcone was killed. Matt’s [Reeves] idea was to have the Penguin show begin about a week after the end of the Batman film. And if it works, if the trajectory is interesting, and the audience goes for it, and we do our jobs right, the second Penguin feature will pick up where the HBO show will end.”
