Hunter Schafer Says It’s ‘Going to Be Tough’ Returning to ‘Euphoria’

Although “Euphoria” is set to begin filming its long-awaited third season in January 2025, Hunter Schafer admitted during an interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that she “has no idea what’s going on” with the upcoming season.

“You could literally ask the entire cast,” she told Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper. “The really important thing is that a lot has happened.”

Schafer, who plays Jules on the hit HBO series, cried as she remembered her co-star Angus Cloud — who died at age 25 in July 2023 — as well as producer Kevin Turen, who died in November of that year.

“I think everyone feels a certain amount of anticipation if we’re supposed to do a season three,” Schafer said. “Obviously I’m still worried about what happened and losing people that we really loved and were part of this family and everything. If we go back, it’s going to be hard.”

“I think there's a world where we can channel that into making a beautiful third season — if that's supposed to happen, but I think that's really confused everyone,” she continued.

Elsewhere in the interview, Schafer revealed that she initially kept her audition for the role of “Euphoria” a secret, believing she might not be cut out for the acting profession.

“I wasn’t really sure I was going to do it, because again I didn’t think acting was my calling or anything like that,” she said. “It wasn’t my plan. It wasn’t my plan.”

Another reason Schaefer kept the test a secret was her Christian upbringing. Although she says her church was “on the scarier side of Christianity,” she was still nervous about telling her parents what she was going to do in the opening episode of Euphoria. (Her father, Mac Schaefer, is a pastor and her mother, Katie Schaefer, is a youth minister.)

“There’s this kind of tradition of portraying a pastor’s daughter. It gets kind of hard,” she said. “When I had to tell my parents, ‘In the first episode, I was having anal sex with a 45-year-old man and cutting myself in the arm,’ my first thought was, ‘Well, they have to tell their congregation that their son is going to be on TV, and then their congregation, who are just good white Christians from the South, are going to watch this TV show and see me get beat up.’ I still feel bad that this is something they still have to deal with.”

Schaffer rose to fame as an unknown actor on Euphoria. After playing Jules on the HBO original series, the 25-year-old actor has starred in shows like The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Kinds of Kindness and the horror thriller Cuckoo, which premieres on Neon on August 9.

Schafer said Zendaya helped her navigate this transition to fame, adding that her Euphoria co-star is “one of my best friends in the world to this day.”

“Luckily, she had some experience with fame already. We were really close by the time we fell in love as friends in the first season,” Schafer said. “She was able to help me through all of that.”
