MGK has announced his new single “Lonely Road” featuring Jelly Roll, set to be released on July 26.
The song, which may mark a shift to country music for MGK, is clearly inspired by John Denver's “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” the popular country song released as a single in 1971 from his fourth album, “Poems, Prayers & Promises,” with the duo referencing the melody and lyrics.
To give fans an idea of what to expect, the sometimes-rapper and sometimes-rocker released a trailer for the music video on social media, captioning the clip, “KellyRoll countdown activated. 🚧 Thanks to John Denver for paving the way.” In the short clip, we see MGK (formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly) hunched over as he is arrested on the hood of a police car, before he and Jelly Roll attend a funeral together. Eagle-eyed fans may notice that Jelly Roll’s wife Bunnie XO appears in the clip, commenting on the IG post, writing, “Let’s roll.”
It's been two years since MGK released his sixth studio album, “Mainstream Sellout,” his second consecutive album to top the Billboard 200 chart following 2020's “Tickets to My Downfall.” Most recently, he teamed up with Trippie Redd on the collaborative EP “Genre: Sadboy,” which dropped last March.
Meanwhile, Jelly Roll has been on a roll. He recently appeared on Eminem’s new album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce),” and in April he won three categories at the CMT Music Awards, including Best Video. He’s currently playing a string of festivals ahead of his Beautifully Broken tour, which kicks off in August.
