Amazon Picks up Anne Hathaway’s ‘Trad Wife’ Thriller Yesteryear


Will Anne Hathaway make bubble gum from scratch? Maybe. According to Deadline, Hathaway will star in and produce an upcoming thriller titled “The Traditional Wife,” based on Cairo Claire Burke’s upcoming novel, yesterdayAfter a battle to secure the rights, Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the rights to adapt the novel, which violates these classifications, into a film. The official synopsis for the novel reads:



Natalie lives a traditional lifestyle—and she has the Instagram account to prove it. Her charming country house on her working farm is smartly stocked, her husband is a handsome cowboy, and her homemade sourdough bread is prettier than ever. What if there were nannies, producers, and industrial ovens behind the scenes?

It wouldn’t hurt what Natalie’s followers don’t know. Then one day, Natalie wakes up in a strange and horrifying version of reality. Her daughter tells her the year is 1805. Is this a hoax? A reality show? A test from God? All Natalie knows is that this would make a great Instagram post.

Taking to social media, author Burke shared that the upcoming film is “the most exciting news” and praised Hathaway, noting that their conversation was “one of the most creative and electric moments” of her life.


“When I got off the phone, I told my husband that if she hadn’t been an actress, she probably would have become a rocket scientist — but I’m so grateful she chose the path she did, because now I get the opportunity to watch her (and the amazing team of women at Amazon) turn my novel into a genre-defying, neck-breaking, breathtaking cinematic thriller. I feel so privileged beyond words. I can’t wait to see what she does with Natalie — and trust me when I say you can’t either,” Burke shared on Instagram.

Hathaway will produce the film under her Somewhere Pictures banner alongside Guymon Casady, Suzan Bymel, and Alexandra Holcomb of Entertainment 360. Burke's work has appeared in The Atlantic, Bustle, and Marie Claire. Burke has an ongoing short story project called Cover Stories, and is an editor at Katie Couric Media.
