Dylan Mulvaney has revealed her big-screen dreams of playing Legally Blonde lead Elle Woods. In an interview with IMDb, Mulvaney, who now has more than 10 million followers on TikTok, detailed her idea of a trans take on the romantic comedy, as well as revealing that her “dream dream” role is that of Glinda in Wicked.

“My dream though is to do a trans Legally Blonde. I wanna play Elle Woods and have maybe a trans Emmett and a trans Paulette. And I think what’s so cool about plugging trans people into existing stories is it inherently changes what the topic is, but in a way that you don’t actually have to do much to the script because it becomes something different — but actually, I think it makes it even more powerful.”

The original Legally Blonde came out in 2001 and has since become something of a cult classic. Directed by Robert Luketic, the movie follows Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods who, after her boyfriend breaks up with her for a smarter girl in order to help his political aspirations and Harvard Law School education, enrolls in the same school and finds she has an affinity for law as she overcomes stereotypes against blondes.

It has now been more than two decades since the sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde hit screens, with audiences eager to once again join the eternally upbeat Elle on another adventure in the courtroom.

Legally Blonde 3 Currently in the Works From Mindy Kaling & Dan Goor

While Dylan Mulvaney may want to launch a trans take on the tale of Legally Blonde, it’s more likely that, for now at least, a third Reese Witherspoon-led movie will hit screens. Fans of Witherspoon’s delightfully ditzy Elle Woods have been waiting some time for a third outing, with Legally Blonde 3 officially beginning development back in 2018.

The threequel will see Witherspoon reprise the lead role as well as produce, with The Office star and creator of The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling, writing the script alongside Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Dan Goor. Kaling has since revealed some details regarding her approach to the long-awaited sequel, which will follow Elle now in her 40s.

“I can’t wait to see what people think. How Elle Woods is at 40 versus when she was 21 has been really fun to imagine. Hopefully. I don’t know when we’ll be able to shoot movies again. Shooting it this year would be awesome. I can’t wait for you guys to see this movie.

Bend and Snap is forever. We definitely have a lot of fan favorites from the original. We’ll still do that.”

What does Elle Woods look like at 40? Elle is a mom with a thriving career. We’re looking forward to seeing the script come in sometime in the first quarter.”

Legally Blonde has also now been transformed into a Broadway musical, which will inevitably be adapted for the screen eventually. So, while Dylan Mulvaney will have to wait for Legally Blonde 3 to be released, her dreams of starring as Elle Woods are not over yet…
