‘I Sort of Put the Idea Out Into the World’

In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Numbers star David Krumholtz revealed to us that he has tried to bring back the crime drama series for a revival. Likening the return of Numbers (also sometimes known as NUMB3RS) to such recent comebacks as those made by Frasier and Monk, Krumholtz said that he did “put the idea” of a Numbers revival “out into the world,” but, sadly, CBS said “no.”

“I was, a few years ago. I sort of put the idea out into the world, called the creators of the show and said, ‘Hey, why don’t we do this? They’re starting to reboot stuff.’ And they took it to CBS, and CBS said no. So that was the end of that.”

Unfortunately, while fans of Numbers may love to see it return to screens, Krumholtz does not think it will ever happen now thanks to the merciless passing of time.

“And now, since then, I’ve lost a considerable amount of hair. And so, I don’t want people watching the show, going, ‘Yes, but his hair was the draw back then.’ So, yeah, it’ll never happen.”

Created by Nicolas Falacci and Cheryl Heuton, Numbers ran from 2005 to 2010 and was canceled after six seasons. The show follows FBI Special Agent Don Eppes (Rob Morrow) and his brother Charlie Eppes (David Krumholtz), a college mathematics professor and prodigy, who helps Don solve crimes for the FBI.

David Krumholtz was also part of the cast of the cult favorite series Freaks and Geeks, a show that many would love to see come back for more. Alas, much like Numbers, Krumholtz does not think there’s much chance of a revival either.

“From time to time, maybe we mentioned some stuff, but no, I mean, it’s a long time ago. [Martin] stole that show, let’s face it. I mean, the discovery that Judd Apatow and Paul Feig made in Martin Starr was massive for them. They got lucky on that. I mean, Martin got lucky, but they got lucky. They found one of the more unique, interesting, believable, grounded actors there is. He’s unbelievable in that show. But he’s great in everything.”

Alongside Numbers and Freaks and Geeks, David Krumholtz is also known for the likes of The Santa Clause franchise, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Deuce, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. He was recently part of one of the most stacked ensemble casts of all time in director Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The actor commented on the many Oscar wins that were accrued by the biopic, calling it “humbling” to be part of the movie that went on to win Best Picture.

“It’s very emotional, because you work a long time toward that goal and toward imagining that that might happen for you one day, and then the day comes, and it’s pinch-yourself stuff. It’s humbling, and I’m just filled with gratitude.”
