John Krasinski Cried Everyday Reuniting with Steve Carell for IF

Summary

  • John Krasinski reveals that he was “crying all day” when he reunited with his
    Office
co-star Steve Carell to make the animated feature film,
    IF.
  • Krasinski starred alongside Carell in
    The Office,
as the actors portrayed Jim Halpert and Michael Scott respectively.
  • Krasinski wanted to make a family-friendly film that his daughters could watch after the success of his burgeoning horror franchise,
    A Quiet Place.

It’s been nearly 11 years since Jim Halpert pulled off the “best prank ever” in The Office series finale, which brought back Steve Carell’s Michael Scott to serve as the best man at Dwight Schrute’s (Rainn Wilson) wedding. Jim, who was played by John Krasinski during all nine seasons of The Office, worked over seven of those years with co-star Carell. And now, over a decade later, Krasinski and Carell are reuniting in the upcoming animated feature film, IF. And Krasinski admits to “crying all day” when it came to working with his friend once again. Krasinski said in an interview with Total Film magazine (per SlashFilm):

“As much fun as it was to work with him, the most powerful part about it was
he came in with the most heartfelt speech about how proud he is of me to be making movies.
He said in reading the script, ‘I’m just so honored to be a part of it. I’ll do whatever it takes.’ So, when
I thought that I would be laughing all day, I was crying all day.”

Carell portrays the lead IF, aka Imaginary Friend, in the upcoming animated adventure, who is known as Blue. The Man Upstairs (Ryan Reynolds) soon learns that his daughter, Bea (Cailey Fleming), can actually see the IFs. And according to the kindhearted Blue, Bea is the key to saving all the imaginary friends. Krasinski also pointed out why his former co-star from The Office was the perfect choice to step in Blue’s furry shoes. Krasinski said in the same interview:

He [Carell] is a person that you just want to run up to and hug, and that’s exactly what Blue is.

Reuniting John Krasinski and Steve Carell Was Just a Question of IF

John Krasinski and Steve Carell were among the crème de la crème of those starring on NBC’s hit sitcom, and both actors shined when it came to portraying two of the zaniest and funniest Office characters to work at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch. But there’s no denying that the “world’s best boss,” as denoted by Michael Scott’s (Carell) coffee mug, and Jim Halpert (Krasinski) shared one of the series’ most heart-warming moments when a teary-eyed Michael said farewell to his employee and friend in Season 7’s “Goodbye, Michael.” And Krasinkski spoke more about reuniting with Carell in a December 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“Oh my God,
The Office reunion we’ve all been waiting for is in it.
The truth is, Steve’s one of the most talented people on the planet. So, whether I had ever worked with him before or not, I would’ve been gunning for him because
I just had his voice in my head when I was writing Blue.”

Where do your imaginary friends come from? A new movie aims to tell you using a trope that has been used before.

Krasinski continued:

[Blue] is not going to defend anyone — he’s just going to give you giant hugs and be adorable. And what better person to give giant hugs and be adorable than Steve Carell.

Krasinski has enjoyed plenty of success since parting ways with The Office back in 2013. Most notably, Krasinski shined both in front and behind the camera in the horror film A Quiet Place, which led to both a 2020 sequel and this summer’s upcoming prequel, A Quiet Place: Day One. But the Quiet Place franchise boasts some very frightening scenes, and, as it turns out, Krasinski wanted to make a movie that his own daughters could actually watch. Krasinski said in the same interview with EW:

I figured I needed to make a movie for my kids. Seeing as though Quiet Place is like PG-40 in our house — they won’t see Quiet Place till they’re 40 — I figured I should make one for them.

IF
opens exclusively in theaters on May 17.
