The adaptation is expected to include some major changes from the book, with author Edward Ashton previously revealing that he had no idea a movie was in the works until he saw a press release. However, the writer said he wouldn’t mind Bong making changes to the story as it transitions to the big screen. He explained to Nerdist:
“He doesn’t need me involved. I’m not complaining about it at all. People have asked me, ‘Are you nervous?’ Literally, director Bong is going to change a lot in the book. When I talked to him, he made it very clear. ‘You have a 350-page book. I’m going to have a 120-page script. There’s a lot I’m going to do.’ So my answer is no, I’m not worried about it at all. In my opinion, the guy is a genius. I don’t think he’s ever made a bad movie. And I sincerely hope this isn’t his first.”
Meanwhile, Bong described Mickey 17 Pattinson described the film as “a story about a simple guy who ends up saving the world. It's a weird hero's kind of journey,” while Pattinson described the film as “unusual,” “weird,” and “funny.”
“I’ve been a huge fan of Bong’s for many years, he’s my hero. I was sent the script, and I was told, ‘You’ll love the script, but the role is impossible.’ That was very exciting to me. I thought it was the most bizarre and funny script.”
