Burton’s decision to incorporate stop-motion animation into the sequel is a nod to the handmade, artisanal quality that has become a hallmark of his work. “It needed a back-to-basics, handmade quality,” Burton remarked. “It reenergized why I love making movies.” The director is no stranger to this animation style, having previously directed ‘Corpse Bride’ and ‘Frankenweenie,’ as well as producing classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach.

The sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is penned by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and is based on a story by Seth Grahame-Smith. It reunites Burton with key cast members from the original film, including Michael Keaton as the eccentric ghost Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. Newcomers to the franchise include Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter Astrid, Monica Bellucci as Betelgeuse’s wife, Willem Dafoe as an afterlife detective, and Justin Theroux as Rory.
