Woody Allen’s Coup de Chance Boasts Best Rotten Tomatoes Score for the Filmmaker in Over a Decade

It’s been over a decade since a Woody Allen film has scored as well with the critics as his new movie Coup de Chance. And, at the time of this writing, Coup de Chance currently registers 82% on Rotten Tomatoes against 68 reviews. That’s the highest Tomatometer rating achieved by one of Allen’s pictures since 2013’s Blue Jasmine (90%). In his review, famed film critic Leonard Maltin said of Allen’s 50th big-screen endeavor:

Would anyone pay particular attention to a French import about love and deception without well-known stars if Woody Allen’s name weren’t attached to it? Perhaps not. But since this is his work — recognizably so —it’s worth seeing.

The only film of Allen’s, other than Coup de Chance, not to splat and be rated as rotten by the majority of critics in the last 11 years is 2016’s Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart-led Café Society (71% against 258 reviews). Kyle Smith of the Wall Street Journal declares, “[Coupe de Chance is] Woody Allen’s best work in many years.” Manohla Dargis of The New York Times says:

‘Coup de Chance,’ the latest from Woody Allen, looks and plays like many of his recent movies, only better; it sounds like them, too, except that it’s in French.


Filmmaker Woody Allen’s Stroke of Luck


88-year-old Woody Allen is “on the fence” about retiring, but after the critical reception to his latest film Coup de Chance — translates to “stroke of luck” in English — perhaps fans will get to see the Academy Award winner put together at least one more filmmaking effort before saying that’s a wrap. David Stratton of The Australian writes in his review:

Coup de chance is the 50th film Allen has ­directed and one of his best. It was made in France and is, to all intents and purposes, a French movie.

Additionally, the movie’s audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is currently 80%.
